“ENG 1117” was like facing a fight with a lion in 2019. i registered 1117 spring 2019 and ended up withdrawal because it was my first semester in college and everything was totally new to me as i completed high school outside the country and adapting the college version of USA became huge challenge. some of my friends used to tell me 1117 is a college level and it is hard and complicated.

so far so good, i completed ENG 1090 last fall of 2019 and now 1117 became easier than before but made great changes on my reading and writing. the interesting part is ” doing research” .writing articles based on information gathered from different sources. “blogging” i can say it is an opportunity for my dream of becoming an author. it shows me the right path of writing and sharing. i really appreciate miss ROBINSON BONNIE for her dedicated hard work and support she provided in class and even during the lock down, i am grateful and feel blessed to have my instructor Bonnie during this journey of completing this class.

i was writing most of my posts from my own experiences and my close friend’s story to motivate and empower. a good example is ”  Asha and Asli are two sisters who grew the same home, but life torn them a part where each is currently having a different lifestyle. Asha is married at a young age and gave birth to six kids. She decided to stay home and focus on parenting only while her sister Asli invested herself on education and created a beautiful living style but stayed single. Although both have similar childhood background but the way they viewed life is totally different and inspiring and each of them hold an important role in the community. and ” Asha and Asli are struggling on how to get a satisfaction in life, both have the talent to create a beautiful life but, there is also a weakness and strength in both sides of their story. Asha feels she is far behind and it will take time to reach the level she is looking forward to safe her children from the waves of teenage life. While her sister Asli is feeling like starting a new chapter of her life which seems to be frustrating and heavy duty ahead. Both have similar feelings inside but different objectives.”

asha and asli, both are my friends and i feel comfortable sharing their story although i have full information about the side of their life that am writing about.

i was so proud of my writings that i posted in my blog specially the way i conveyed the information to make useful for the reader as well as not exposing the deep secrets of the narrator. here is an example ” after leaving school she started working but her parents never agreed with her decision. they tried to take her back to school in any means. they even proposed her to choose the school she like no matter what state the school is located, they will buy for her the latest car in the town if she accept it but all that emotional appeal never worked. later some years she got married and moved to a different state. with in one year her father passed away. her mother and young brother could not manage the business that the father used to run and ended up losing and become broke. on the other hand muna’s partner started treating her like……………… i can’t even mention the life she went through with his relationship, really heartbreaking that a women could handle. life turned to a new face for Muna, no money, no happy marriage, no enough education just life falling apart day by the day.” . the above sentence that i made bold style had a hidden information from muna’s story but i made it confidential because i met some of my friends sharing sensitive information with me and i provide a listening ear that never share with people with out their permission.

big question= can i use my blog after completing this class as my writing platform? if yes it will be a useful invention to me that i will use many years ahead. my writing ability improved so much and the quantity of articles i can publish is higher than before specially sourcing information from books, websites etc.

today is mothers day let me say shout out to all hardworking mothers around the world. regardless of the challenges faced by women, there are an outstanding and super rated women in the world because of their level of education and their contribution to make valuable changes.based on the current statistics in the enrolled and graduated women from universities in the united states of America are improving that shows there will be a growing rate of successful women.

Since the early 1970s, women have surpassed men in terms of college enrollment and graduation rates.^[3][4][5]

According to Ellen DuBois and Lynn Dumenil, they estimate that the number of bachelor and doctorate degrees from 1950–1980 for women are:^[6]

i have talked about this topic in my previous post and now i want to deeply search for the resources available for the autistic kids and how are they benefiting from it. How the American government is prioritizing and provide support. besides the federal government there are so many non-profit organizations giving a helping hand special this Covid 19 pandemic.

Congressmen Chris Smith and Mike Doyle, co-chairs of the Congressional Autism Caucus, sent a letter to congressional leadership this week expressing some of our concerns and requests for additional support for people with autism.

In a time of uncertainty, people with autism and their families are facing sudden disruptions in daily services and resources. This is forcing many autistic individuals over the “services cliff,” as supports they normally receive within a school system, day program or other setting are no longer available. To address the demands this is placing on individuals and families, we are advocating for policymakers to quickly provide assistance to individuals on the spectrum to ensure that their health and educational needs are met. Here are just a few of the policies we are fighting for:

Educational supports for students with autism

We support the efforts of states and localities to resume educating all students as soon and as safely as possible, including measures to ensure that distance learning and other supports address the unique needs of students with disabilities and comply with existing requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Looking ahead, we specifically support increased funding under IDEA to provide compensatory services for students with disabilities so that schools have the resources to help them make up for lost time. While schools are not providing general education services, we support state and local efforts to provide teaching resources to caregivers at home.

Expanding telehealth services

We support expanding telehealth services to provide continuity in access to physical and mental health services. Expanding access to telehealth services – including behavioral, physical and mental health care – could help families and individuals access care necessary for maintaining their health and wellness during this crisis and beyond. We specifically support expanding grants at the Health Resources and Services Administration that target individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities.

this is really good news and big shout out to all involving parties in these programme. this makes the families with autism feel safe and prioritized, protected and respected based on their differences.

35 percent of young adults (ages 19-23) with autism have not had a job or received postgraduate education after leaving high school. (Shattuck et al., 2012)

It costs more than $8,600 extra per year to educate a student with autism. (Lavelle et al., 2014) (The average cost of educating a student is about $12,000 – NCES, 2014)

In June 2014, only 19.3 percent of people with disabilities in the U.S. were participating in the labor force – working or seeking work. Of those, 12.9 percent were unemployed, meaning only 16.8 percent of the population with disabilities was employed. special need is a broad term but, now i will focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder.Disorders are a group of disorders that affect the development of the nervous system, leading to abnormal brain function which may affect emotion, learning ability, self-control, and memory. The effects of neurodevelopmental disorders tend to last for a person’s lifetime.

BIG QUESTION: What causes these disorders?———

Autism spectrum disorder has no single known cause. Given the complexity of the disorder, and the fact that symptoms and severity vary, there are probably many causes. Both genetics and environment may play a role.

• Genetics. Several different genes appear to be involved in autism spectrum disorder. For some children, autism spectrum disorder can be associated with a genetic disorder, such as Rett syndrome or fragile X syndrome. For other children, genetic changes (mutations) may increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder. Still other genes may affect brain development or the way that brain cells communicate, or they may determine the severity of symptoms. Some genetic mutations seem to be inherited, while others occur spontaneously.
• Environmental factors. Researchers are currently exploring whether factors such as viral infections, medications or complications during pregnancy, or air pollutants play a role in triggering autism spectrum disorder.

the above information clearly shows that this is not the parent’s faults and other medical related causes thus, it can not be prevented. now how can those with autism spectrum supported along their journey specially in school. how far are they safe from violence and bullying?

CASE: 

Peter is a 26-year-old group home resident in Austria with a history of poor peer relationships, including being bullied, and previous diagnoses of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Asperger syndrome, social anxiety, depression, and developmental coordination disorder. Consultation from our international neurodevelopmental team was requested for severe anxiety and avoidance of social interactions. He reported 4 or more spontaneous anxiety episodes per day. Anxiety triggers included returning to his group home from his vocational rehabilitation program each evening or returning to the group home after weekends at his parents’ house. Each Sunday evening, in anticipation of returning to the group home, Peter engaged in tantrums, including screaming and throwing objects and suicidal threats without intent, but not direct aggression toward family members. He phoned his mother several times per day on weekdays.

Peter’s early history was significant for hyperactivity, impulsivity, aggression, and socially intrusive behavior; he repeated kindergarten and by first grade was characterized as motorically clumsy and “too much in [peers’] personal space.” He played alone in kindergarten and had poor social boundaries; when older, he evidenced reduced social perception, and his family reported he did not notice when peers made fun of him. His language developed normally, but he had a “sophisticated style of speaking” and as an adult continued to have trouble understanding gestures, jokes, and social themes in movies.

Between ages 7 and 11 years, Peter had been bullied and ostracized by male peers but did well academically, always got along well with adults, and preferred to play with girls. Exclusion by peers persisted through high school, at which time his independent functioning declined and he required his mother’s assistance with organizing his materials. At age 15 years, Peter repeated a grade so that he could change classmates, and by the equivalent of his junior year, his grades deteriorated. He had several psychiatric admissions for depression and destructive outbursts (to avoid going to school) and was diagnosed with Asperger disorder. At age 18 years, Peter refused to return to school. He lived at home with his parents, only leaving the house to accompany them on errands, until placed in a group home for people with mental health disorders at age 20 years. At age 26 years, he is sharing a supported-living apartment with 2 young adults with chronic psychiatric disorders. He works in 3 highly structured sheltered workshops for a few hours each and becomes easily overwhelmed in unstructured situations and/or in situations in which he anticipates being reprimanded or letting someone down. Despite a strong interest in marine biology, anxiety prevents him from considering college.

How would you proceed with diagnostic testing or intervention help this young man?.

the above article is really heart-touching story of a young man who become a victim until he left school….my mission is how to get more and more youth returning back to school and shape their life.

what do you think such cases can be prevented and special need students can learn feeling safe in school?

Here are some ways you can deal with stigma:

• Get treatment. You may be reluctant to admit you need treatment. Don’t let the fear of being labeled with a mental illness prevent you from seeking help. Treatment can provide relief by identifying what’s wrong and reducing symptoms that interfere with your work and personal life.
• Don’t let stigma create self-doubt and shame. Stigma doesn’t just come from others. You may mistakenly believe that your condition is a sign of personal weakness or that you should be able to control it without help. Seeking counseling, educating yourself about your condition and connecting with others who have mental illness can help you gain self-esteem and overcome destructive self-judgment.
• Don’t isolate yourself. If you have a mental illness, you may be reluctant to tell anyone about it. Your family, friends, clergy or members of your community can offer you support if they know about your mental illness. Reach out to people you trust for the compassion, support and understanding you need.
• Don’t equate yourself with your illness. You are not an illness. So instead of saying “I’m bipolar,” say “I have bipolar disorder.” Instead of calling yourself “a schizophrenic,” say “I have schizophrenia.”
• Join a support group. Some local and national groups, such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), offer local programs and internet resources that help reduce stigma by educating people who have mental illness, their families and the general public. Some state and federal agencies and programs, such as those that focus on vocational rehabilitation and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), offer support for people with mental illness.
• Get help at school. If you or your child has a mental illness that affects learning, find out what plans and programs might help. Discrimination against students because of a mental illness is against the law, and educators at primary, secondary and college levels are required to accommodate students as best they can. Talk to teachers, professors or administrators about the best approach and resources. If a teacher doesn’t know about a student’s disability, it can lead to discrimination, barriers to learning and poor grades.

building construction partnership

Muna is a mother of 3 and a university student at north Dakota state university. she was raised in a beautiful life but during her teenage she dropped the ability to make use of the opportunity surrounding her life. after couple years of demanding she finally picked up her self and started a new page with different version of her life.

her parents provided all kind of luxuries they could afford for their daughter to show love as well as supporting her in her education until high school where she dropped out of school. she was given a high priority on assisting assignments and buying school supplies that she needed. unfortunately muna was only interesting gifts that her parents used to surprise her but she was not ready to continue studying instead she pursued herself just do it for the sake of the parents.

she started looking back the good days and her only reaction was tears falling down her into chicks. one day she went to the beach to refresh and make meaningful decisions. an old woman in the beach approached her with smile and stood next to her. they looked at each other, Muna turned her face down feeling anxious and the old women said” you are so beautiful girl with inner spirit can we have a little conversation” Muna was like does she know me? and replied sure. they discussed about Muna’s life on how she misused her precious time and opportunity and the frustrating relationship she is in now and how she can make change. Muna said to me the statement that changed my whole life was when the old women told me ” it does not matter what took place in the past what matters most is how you lift yourself and start anew page or you keep on regretting and never make change”.

finally she ended the relationship and went back to school, after a lot of hard work and patience now she is a University student planning to continue until PHD of her field of study.

                    in this modern world, kids are sent to school as young as three years old but, it may not the expected purpose. Learning in school is a long journey with so many obstacles and challenges that may throw some one into the blowing waves of dangerous zones. Regardless of the academic resources available there are teenagers dropping out of the school and ending up life full of regret.

                 What are the resources available in colleges in Minnesota? Health services, Professor office hours, International/domestic peer programs, Mental health services, safety programs, Food discounts, Used bookstores and Computer labs and even including sports activities for the students. Still some members of the community are not making use of these resources or benefiting from these opportunity but the question is why?.

“If somebody is getting off the path, it’s much easier to make the correction if you discover the problem quickly,” Renick says.

Typically, Renick says, students are most vulnerable to dropping out within the first year. At Spelman, however, Campbell says the school has noticed attrition between student’s sophomore and junior years.

Regardless of when students leave, it’s statistically unlikely they will return and finish their degree.

“Nationally, the data show that if a student ‘stops out’ involuntarily from college, even for a single semester, they only have about a 30 percent chance of ever coming back and finishing their degrees. So we want to keep the momentum going, and keep people enrolled. Once they ‘stop out’ there’s a lot of inertia that is difficult to overcome, and to get them back into college,” Renick says.

Education professionals suggest that students meet with academic advisers right away to get back on track. And while the schools are trying to be proactive to get students to graduation day, they say students need to do the same and plan ahead – even before college.

“In addition to doing the research beforehand, to figure out what college fits best, I think students and families really do need to sit down and do that long-range financial planning and be very deliberate about that, because it’s four years – it’s a significant investment,” Campbell says.

                                  So now how can we help drop outs to come back to school and finish their preferred level= I could say community awareness and team work with in the current students and work together on how to build that breach of uplifting the fellow students(drop outs).

                           Ultimately, despite a school’s best efforts, some students will drop out. For those that do, there is a path back to college.

time is the most precious gift on earth because if it passes once or misused it can not be recovered again. i would like to talk about the difference between successful and unsuccessful people while they both have the same 24-hour a day. according to my research on different sources i found out that what matters most is how someone his/her day through out the year/entire life for example with in 5 years some one made incredible change and achieved set goal while another person don’t even know how that 5 years past and nothing on hand.

if you don’t make yourself busy on doing valuable tasks then surely you will be busy doing nothing. but what do i mean that? the answer is simple= you will hang around with friends, watch movies or scrolling your phone screen from one app to another which makes your brain on recording all your activities that may create negative habit for you.

self esteem is the most challenging and so many students are dealing with anxiety and loss of inner self. according to my view i can say this is something that started during childhood because kids hear more than they speak. it happens that some one is trying to encourage the child but kills the moral for example- comparing with other kids(brothers,sisters,relatives or neighboring child). the other factor is poor relationship between the child and parents that makes the child feel lonely which leads to seeking of approval from others because he/she never had the appreciation or praising from his talents.

                              From my childhood, I used to interest reading books about the people’s stories. My uncle helped me get more books from the local library and bookstores. As I was growing my passion of reading was expanding and took the experience from people’s lives and made it some of guidelines. The developing world changed the reading style which led many students like me to take more steps ahead and move with the new technology of writing.

                            If I mention some of the stages of writing I know are books, magazine, websites, social media like Facebook, twitter and Instagram, blogging. I used both but reading from website is my favorite.                         Blogging can help students to do research by reading posts on a certain topic and compare the information then pick the most appropriate answer for their concerned need of information. This reduces the use of books while doing research. Imaginations is something happened years ago, this makes some individuals like the heroes or those who achieved well in certain field to be more famous. Thus, bloggers create public awareness. that makes people think and see things differently, value and react completely different. When It comes to blogging each blogger shares what he/she values the most, then some followers may not see it as important as the writer while others may show interest and see it as a helpful information. That is how human perception differs.
